JAPAN. IN. A. BOX.

We have been absolutely loving our subscription to #sakuraco - a superb Japanese subscription box.

Each box highlights a different one of Japan’s 47 prefectures, and occasionally celebrates a season.

The October ‘Ibaraki’ Harvest box was beautifully packaged and filled with top quality sweet and savoury snacks as well as a lovely little bowl.

The snacks were very unique and from specialty artisan producers.

The high quality booklet and videos introduced us to family businesses and lots of information about Ibaraki prefecture, which we have not visited before.

Highly recommend - not a paid ad, we just get so much enjoyment from it.

MONDAY. FEELS. I always feel better when I make

MONDAY. FEELS.

I always feel better when I make the effort to see friends. And the effort to reach out.

Even if the kid/car/husband logistics aren’t smooth sailing.

We had a great weekend despite bubba having a cold caught from big sister (who is still sniffly), and me coming down with mastitis again on Saturday (inflammatory not infective thankfully).

A great impromptu ‘because we aren’t in lockdown’ party hosted by someone I admire who reached out.

Breakfast out for Valentines with my beautiful kids on best behaviour. Everyone chatting to each other. Smiling at each other’s kids. A shared experience.

I saw a family with their differently abled child enjoying the sun too. I wanted to wish them well and let them know ‘I see you’. Part of the convivial mood. I wasn’t sure how though so just smiled and wished them a Happy Valentines’ as we left. How else could I have engaged with them? 🤔👇

Which brings me to Monday. The gentle baby rhythm. Hoping for a long nap so I can do some computer work.

And I daydream about eating all the things.

I never do though, I always eat the healthy option. 💭 noods 🍜 tho

CAN. I. HAVE. AN. ICE. BLOCK? One of my childhood

CAN. I. HAVE. AN. ICE. BLOCK?

One of my childhood memories is of making homemade ice blocks with mum using Tupperware moulds.

My favourite flavour was Milo and in the Sydney Summer heat it would drip sticky brown ribbon trails down my arms.

With a basketful of ingredients from ALDI, my daughter (3 1/2) and I made some pretty fancy looking but actually easy Triple Layer Ice Blocks.

First mash a kiwi and a mango in separate bowls with a teaspoon of maple syrup. Pop some passionfruit pulp in a third.

Juice an orange and sweeten the juice with a teaspoon of maple syrup.

Mix 100ml of coconut milk with two teaspoons of maple syrup.

Spoon a dessert spoon of kiwi into an ice block mould. Repeat alternating mango, passion fruit and kiwi until all of your moulds have fruit.

Freeze for an hour.

Pour orange juice over the fruit leaving 1/3 of the moulds at the top empty. Freeze for 40 minutes.

Pour sweetened coconut milk over the orange juice to fill the moulds then push the pop sticks and lids to close.

Freeze for an hour and enjoy!

FOMO. PERFECTIONISM. AND. OVEREXTENDING. Over th

FOMO. PERFECTIONISM. AND. OVEREXTENDING.

Over the weekend we had a stand for our wines at Cellar Door Fest. Three days in the city working long hours. Not to mention planning, packing, unpacking and kitting out our stand. With two little kids. Staying at a different hotel each night requiring us to move our cars and luggage.

Why did I vehemently believe this was achievable?

It actually nearly was.

But.

We were unhappy and bickering. It was extraordinarily stressful. The logistics nightmarish. A massive summer storm as we packed the Ute, then drove in separate cars to setup. The reception guy Brad at the convention centre denied me access to the parents room to change my baby’s Nappy because there was someone already in there. (What the?!) My daughter was wired from all the excitement and slept poorly. Baby cried in the car every time. And I got gastro or maybe it was a reaction to stress/exhaustion.

I am grateful that we broke even. I’m grateful for the little moments when Bubs was happy and cooing and smiling at me and other people at the festival. I’m grateful that we got to catch up with some of our loyal customers, friends and wine critics. The best part was having a bubble bath with baby - we don’t have a bath at home.

But it was overall too stressful.

Who else tries to do it all? Who else has FOMO? Who else strives for perfection almost uncontrollably?

HOW. BAO-T. IT.

I made a home version of a takeaway favourite. And I veganified it.

Start with steaming the bao buns for eight minutes.

Pan fry the vegan ‘meat’balls until golden brown.

Mix the green goddess salad bowl (see my previous post - I love it!)

Mix some bbq sauce with some 5 Spice for a DIY hoisin sauce.

And you’re good to go!

Every single ingredient comes from ALDI.

What a great snack to serve at a party!
