On an Autumn sunday afternoon, what to do.
Why not spend some time with a wine glass in one hand, and a paintbrush in the other?
Well, Studio Vino can help you out with that. Jen Halman founder of Studio Vino and her merry band of artists runs wine and art classes.
At the same time! Taking place either in a winery or in the studio in Bowden, they all come with instruction, materials, two drinks, shared platters, fun, and your 40cm x 30cm painting to take home, all for $68.
Not arty? No worries. Don’t think you like painting? Fret not. This is a friendly, relaxed environment where the focus is on fun, wine and having a go.
So here are 5 good reasons to do a Studio Vino wine & art class.
I rolled up to Serafino Wines in McLaren Vale, and was greeted by a chorus of honks from the resident flock of geese.
I was warmly welcomed by Jen and invited to choose a spot in front of a canvas.
Now was the the opportunity to cash in our drink tokens – can do!
1. Wine!
Two drinks tokens are included in the package which can be traded in at any time for wine, beer, or soft drinks.

Deep purple-black with a crimson rim.
Sniff Sniff
Black fruit, pepper.
Sip Sip
Super soft tannins, juicy acid green apple finish.
With my background becoming shades of red and orange in the big swirly strokes I was enjoying employing, and the blackening of the edges for depth, it was time to cash in my second wine chip for some bubbles.

Bright green apple.
Sip Sip
Crunchy green apple, vanilla and subtle toastiness, juicy clean finish.
2. Creativity
It;s not often I take time out to purely indulge in creativity, I’m always go, go, go! Taking a few hours for myself to put aside my day to day worries and pick up a paintbrush was liberating. I was wielding that thing with abandon and loving it!
Even if you don’t think you are creative, the instructors are hands on and break the process down step by step – trust me, if I can do it and get a passable result, anyone can.
While the painting design is pre chosen, there is plenty of scope to wield your own individual flair.
Step by step, feel free to branch out and do it your way. Try different colours, different strokes, and reinterpret it your way, everything is okay!
Would be a real hoot for a hens do, methinks!
3. Snacks
Once the painting is underway, time goes quickly.
Steps go quickly, soon we have the beginning of something amazing.
A good time to take a break, admire our work and have a snack.
Boy, what snacks!
3. New Skills
Learning is also part of the experience. It’s not everyday we adults learn some new tricks, but this is the perfect opportunity. Taking a blank canvas from white to ready for ready for detail takes skill! The next step to take was scary for me, drawing confident, black twigs and branches. But the artists broke it down and away I went. It worked!
Then it was time to draw on some Love Birds – my new skills only went far enough to draw an outline I needed some help.
Thankfully our handy dandy resident artist gave me a hand and my tweety birds turned out just perfect!
4. New Friends
I went to the wine and art class solo and it was no problem at all, I made friends with my fellow budding artists, the real artists too!
It’s funny how a class gets people talking.
5. Take Home Your Custom Artwork
At the end of the class, everyone goes home with a prize, their hand painted canvas!
I really enjoyed the class, and think it is a really clever concept. Go on, give a wine & art class a go, you won’t regret it!
