Waywood Wines Cellar Door & Restaurant Review – May 2015

Husband-and-wife team Andrew Wood and Lisa Robertson have opened the second-newest cellar door in McLaren Vale.

Take a drive up past Kay Brothers and you will find Waywood Wines and Luscious Red kitchen in the picturesque setting of one of the Vale’s two lavender farms.

A long verandah will soon be enclosed to provide year round garden wine tasting and nibbling, with lovely views toward the Mt Lofty Ranges.

Vaulted ceilings and picture windows plus plenty of wood make the tasting room inviting. There is a communal table, lounges or barrels to sit at while enjoying your tasting with Andrew.

Little touches like seasonal local fruit make you feel at home.

The cellar door and kitchen are the culmination of a dream for Andrew & Lisa, and it’s fun to visit and be a part of that.

Lisa is in charge of the kitchen.

Local, seasonal produce is dressed lovingly, simply with flavours that speak of the Mediterranean climate we bask in.

With a name like Luscious Reds, and a philosophy of crafting morsels to bring out the character of the wines, it’s very hard to resist.

Especially for me, as my initials are LR!

#WaywoodWines new cellar door has an eatery just made for me #LusciousReds – my initials on a glass! 💕 Review up on the blog soon

Mr Wino opted for a glass of the 96 Series 2010 Shiraz Cab, and I had the 2009 Cab Franc to go with our grazing plates.

First, we opt for the “POTTED” special – earthy sweet beetroot dip which is sweet and fresh tasting. It’s served with freshly made, charred flat bread so soft and yielding and smokey.

“SMOKED” trout pate ($15) contains plenty of lovely smoked trout, and is nice and creamy.

I “borrowed” a few of Mr Wino’s caperberries, and he made short work of the rest of the dish!

Next up, “GRILLED” ($15).

Feta baked en papillote with thyme, olive oil and lemon juice, to hot yielding consistency. Served alongside are McLaren Vale olives and freshly made flat breads.

Mopped up with the flatbreads the lovely salty, herby, lemony cheese and juices are absolutely delicious.

“FRITTO” saffron and pea arancini ($15) are juicy and yielding inside, with a lovely crunchy crust. The spicy sofrito made a perfect foil to the crunchy arancini.

We had a wonderful visit and the cellar door has a wonderful and inviting vibe, with thoughtful food and wine matching, Flights with nibbles to match, or choose a la carte and a glass of your favourite from the tasting. Speaking of which, it is a personable, fun tasting which if you are lucky is taken by the winemaker himself.

Put Waywood and Luscious Red on your must visit list!
