Aldinga Bay Cafe Review – Dec 2013

For the foodie, there are many favourite cuisines. Those that like it hot, normally include Indian as one of those favourites. Good curry is fantastic, but good curry at the right price is a a beast as elusive as the unicorn. Most neighbourhood Indian restaurants these days are bloated with too much cream, sugar and same-saminess. Curry just means sauce. Sauces are infinite in variety, each unique in it’s consistency and spices. Curry is supposed to be unique, flavoursome, rich with spice and texture.

Imagine my surprise at finding good curry, at honest prices in a combined curry & fish & chippery opposite the stunning Aldinga beach cliffs.

The cafe is clean & bright with a welcoming vibe. Tables are neatly set and floor to ceiling windows face the Esplanade.

Friendly service includes a basket of poppadoms warm & crisp to keep the hunger pangs at bay while waiting for your chosen goodies. Sandy feet are welcome, like the boys by the window making short work of a newspaper parcel full of minimum chips.

Soon we are brought with a smile a groaning-full & heavy bag of neatly wrapped foil bag parcels and large containers with change from $30. The hardest part is smelling the spicy aromas as we trundle the few kilometres along the Esplanade to sparkling Port Willunga beach.

Envious glances are cast our way  as we unveil our feast and a chilled bottle of fragrant, fruit sweet but clean acid-finishing Geoff Merril rose.

It is a wonderful partner to the rich, cheesy & spicy tandoori-flavoured naan. Currfy puffs are handmade and unique thanks to the black pepper sprinkle and mint chutney for dipping, the spicy pepper working well with the crunchy grenache fruit.

Ditto the fresh vege korma with bright hits of cardamon, medium chili bite, and sauce of ground cashew. Rich dal makhani  mopped up with wholemeal roti and saffron rice work too.

For a feast in  a priceless location, you’d be hard pressed to do better than Aldinga Bay cafe.
